fall comes along to be on point in their grade. >> reporter: the four-week program allows 60 students to connect classroom skills to real world activities. today students are learning to make a healthy salad in a cooking class. by the looks of things, they're enjoying the lesson. >> i like cooking. we get to try out new things. >> we do activities and learn a lot. >> students also enjoy other classes like arts and crafts, sports and games. the students what they learn to become more productive with hands on experience. they're responsible in using both learning and real world skills. this shows how to use what they're learning to create a product which could be used on an open market. it's held during the school year. >> i like that we can learn all day and do lots of work. >> i like learning, learning about the eco system.

a protest broke out outside a california police officer. protesters crowded the anaheim police department chanting cops, pigs, murderers and justice for man yell -- manuel, the name of the man who was killed.

caught on tape, look at this. you don't see this every day. shoppers in pennsylvania got quite a scare when a bear cub made his way into the maw. witnesses say the bear ran into a sears store. shoppers were evacuated from the mall and the pennsylvania game condition were called in to tranquilize the cub and remove him from the building. the bear was wearing a tracking color but they -- collar but they couldn't determine where it came from can you imagine that? going to sears and seeing a bear in the store. many parents of children with health problems rely on benefits. >> the shootings in colorado brought a temporary halt to presidential campaigning. how the candidates are getting back to politics today. full-time caregiver. that's not alone. they rely on thick cuds in medicaid. >> the nebulizer breathing treatment, medication. she's on a vents late -- ventilator. we would be exhausted if we didn't have that nursing at night. >> reporter: despite all the doctors and therapist, simone is the most care free toddler. >> she's a great kid. >> reporter: full of energy. >> it hasn't really taken a toll. so very happy. >> reporter: and that infection smile will melt the hearts of lawmakers as they advocate to keep funding for programs going. >> we're praying that the government doesn't cut that part of the medicaid programs that supports middle class families in time of need.

it is awfully, awfully humid. temperature wise mid-80s now but they were hotter earlier. we topped out in the 90s. you can see the moisture levels running in the low 70s, very humid steamy conditions continuing. in fact, you can see what happened. we go from 820890 degrees -- 88 to 90 degrees. we have the steam bath factor. some storm action mainly to the south over the va, shenandoah area and the northeastern states, a couple of hit and the mills showers, high pressure in control with that hot hair continuing to flow up. it's what we call a dirty high. instead of a crystal clear dome, the blue sky high pressure system. in this case it's a weaker area. there are showers sing around the edge of this thing that has kept temperatures down but the humidity has been to the east and to the west. the extreme heat has been there,

the political ads to stay off the airwaves in colorado at least for a time being. >> another call is for more gun control. what can you tell us about that tonight? >> reporter: neither president obama nor mitt romney has really opened the door for a debate on this issue. here's what we know so far. starting yesterday, white house press secretary jay carney said president wants to keep guns away from people who shouldn't have them. during the primary season you might remember romney said he would oppose new laws that would burden gun owners. a poll asked if it was more important to control guns or protect the rights to ownership. it was a split. we'll have to see if either one of the candidates decide to make this a big issue in their
